Over a two-week period, we stayed at three different places: Three nights at D'Nest Inn near Belize City, six nights at duPlooy's Jungle Lodge in the Cayo District, and five nights at The North Beach in Placencia. All were terrific accommodations. We would recommend them to others who are considering a visit to Belize.

D'Nest Inn, north of Belize City

D'Nest Inn is a wonderful four-room bed-and-breakfast inn located between the airport and Belize City. It was a great base to explore Belize's northern regions.

Oty and Gaby, owners of the inn, are very gracious hosts. They live on the property and spent a lot of time with us, talking about life in Belize.

Our room overlooks the garden and waterway The inn has a lush garden next to the waterway

Cooks prepare our breakfasts featuring local fresh fruits Joining us for breakfast were a family from Florida who coincidentally stayed earlier at duPlooy's

Starting off with tropical fruit salad Herb enjoys eggs, beans and fry bread

Gaby and Oty run a very homey inn and introduced us to their charming grandkids

duPlooy's Jungle Lodge, Cayo District

duPlooy's is a well-run lodge tucked up in the Mayan Mountains near the Guatemala border. Its 24 attractive units are spread throughout the jungle-and-orchard property on the Macal River. The 45-acre Belize Botanical Garden, owned and operated by the duPlooy family, is adjacent to the lodge. If you are a birder and enjoy all sorts of wildlife, this is the place to stay.

Speed bumps on a rough-and-tumble dirt road? Talk about overkill. duPlooy's is definitely worth the five miles of dirt road to get here

Claudia, office staffer, meets and greets us upon arrival Elevated wooden catwalks connect the various buildings

A bathroom and bedroom in the suite where we spent the first two nights

Ricky, bartender extraordinaire, master at slaking our thirst Enjoying happy hour at the open-air bar

It's December but the weather is nice enough to dine outside A long catwalk takes you out to a river overlook

The food was so good that we ended up eating all our meals here over 6 days

More examples of outstanding eats and drinks

For our outings, the staff prepare picnic lunches. Tanika and Anivar carry the ice chest with our picnic fixings. Luis, a friendly waiter, checks on the boa constrictor that paid us a visit for a couple days

duPlooy's maintains a herd of horses for their guests

Ol' Paleface was my favorite horse The buckeroo who took care of all the horses

Local artwork at the lodge reflects the culture of Belize
