Palm Canyon -- Before and After

Every year, we do at least one hike to Palm Canyon, a scenic 2-mile walk from our campsite. The calm oasis amidst hundreds of California palms was a special place.

In September 2004, a major debris flow crashed through Palm Canyon. The flow, more devastating than a flash flood, washed out the main trail and pushed earth-boulders-plants into the valley.

Approximately 300 of the 400+ palm trees were uprooted and swept away. Debris flowed so extensively that campsites were damaged and even the lower campground closed until January.

The scoured landscape is a sight to behold. Remaining "miracle" palms hang on like bereft survivors. In time, nature will restore the canyon. Meanwhile, it's still a special place.

Palms line the canyon as far back as the eye can see Huddling survivors (note same rock in both pics)

Font's Point

Font's Point overlooks the Borrego Badlands and Borrego Valley. The point is at the end of a 4-mile wash, but the spectacular views are worth the drive. Dick and we piled into Jeff and Dawn's SUV for the bumpy ride.

On another day, Dick and Geno hiked down into the Borrego Badlands near Font's Point
