The Amerind Museum in Dragoon, AZ, contains one of the finest private archaelogical and ethnological collections in the nation. Established in 1937, Amerind -- for American Indian -- studies, preserves, and interprets prehistoric and historic Native American cultures.

The museum, an art gallery, and the 1930's home of founder William S. Fulton are situated among the rocks of Texas Canyon. The building architecture and interiors (the home isn't open to the public) are as distinctive as the collections.

After visiting the museum, we hiked the Cochise Stronghold in the nearby Dragoon Mountains. Apaches holed up in this area during the Indian wars. Cochise, the Apache chief, was born in this region and is allegedly buried here.
