After their hike to Silver Peak, Dawn, Jeff and Geno did two more hikes together. Then Geno did a short trek up to the Barfoot Lookout.

GREENHOUSE TRAIL TO WINN FALLS

A vigorous 3-mile, 1500' climb (7.5 miles roundtrip) took us to Winn Falls Overlook, a year-round 400' waterfall, tallest in the Canyon

Winn Falls cascades over the brink in the "V" of the mountain. The Overlook is atop the cliff on the right.

Passing over a creek and through a mixed forest of oaks, pines, firs and bright yellow holly

Hurdling fallen trees, remnants of the devastating 1994 fire

Winn Falls, flanked by palisades, cascades more than 400' over the brink

Hills, valleys and sky islands to the east

HORSESHOE PASS

A moderately strenous 10-mile hike took us 2400' to the top of Horseshoe Saddle at 7200'.

Lower trail passes serene pools of South Cave Creek Great view of aptly named Toupee Mountain

Taking a break at Big Red, a large rhyolite formation

Above the timber line -- the views get better the higher we climb

Jaw-dropping views across Cave Creek Canyon toward Silver Peak

Pointing to Horseshoe Saddle, 7210', our destination

An odd tree -- the bark looks like alligator juniper but the leaves are manzanita-like

Two of more than 28 lizard species found in the canyon

A close-up view of pockmarked Toupee Mountain

It's snack time

A closeup of flat-top mountain, the counterpart to Toupee Mtn, from across the canyon

BARFOOT LOOKOUT

A short peak-bagging hike to the Barfoot Fire Lookout near Rustler Park

Looking north at the Nippers

Looking west toward Willcox Playa and Chiracahua Nat'l Monument -- can you see the reclining silhouette of Cochise?

The boarded-up and battered lookout at 8823'

Barfoot Campground lies right below the Lookout

Looking southeast toward Silver Peak

Two spiny lizards basking on a rock
