More to Do Around Portal

It may seem that Portal is just for birders and hikers, but there's even more to see and do around here . . . checking out the Southwestern Research Station, mountain biking, listening to western music and more.

SOUTHWESTERN RESEARCH STATION

Many biologists, herpetologists, and other scientists study at the › Southwestern Research Station. SWRS provides lodging and meals for the researchers and volunteers.

Cave Creek meanders through the Research Station grounds

The SWRS nature shop sells T-shirts and caps, among other items

Oh deer! Mollie the deer, raised at SWRS, makes friends with Dawn

Lucky for us, the Research Station sometimes opens its dining room to the public, and we enjoyed a nice dinner there

Menu for the day (changes daily)

Nifty bird decorations hang from the dining room ceiling

Robert, the chef, used to supervise gourmet restaurants, but prefers SWRS. Volunteers Hannah and Barbara come from Maine and Tennessee, respectively. They work 24 hours a week, get free room and board, and can sit in on SWRS classes, hike, etc., the rest of the time.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

Geno did a great ride in Cave Creek Canyon and the Chiricahua Mountains

There's some pavement, but most of the roads are hard-packed dirt

Stately sycamores line the road

PARADISE

The historic community of Paradise is about 5 miles from Portal

Seen across the road from the George Walker House, where we barco-birded

When you die, you can go to Paradise . . . Cemetery, that is

Strolling through the cemetery grounds . . . while birding and watching out for snakes

RODEO AND RUSTY'S

Not much happening in Rodeo, New Mexico

Local art in Rodeo

We stayed at Rusty's RV Ranch, about 6 miles north of Rodeo

Plenty of open space and a couple ponds at Rusty's . . . and views of the Chiricahua and Pelocillo Mtns

Rusty and her husband Tim With Rusty's father Bob and fellow RVer Steve

Easter Day potluck hosted by Rusty and Tim Dining with Titanium full-timers Steve and Kathy

› Kip Calahan, accompanied by her husband, Richard, provided great western entertainment

See an excerpt of Kip's performance:
