Portal and Cave Creek Canyon, AZ

Have you heard of Cave Creek Canyon? It's in the Chiricahua Mountain range in southeastern Arizona. We've been to the Chiricahua National Monument, but this was our first visit to Cave Creek, and we were blown away by the majestic scenery.

The area reminds us of Zion Canyon, but it's a lot less known and has only a few services that cater to visitors. In fact, virtually all of our fellow visitors were . . . birders! But more about that in another postcard.

The tiny town of Portal, population 80?, is the aptly named gateway to the region. We actually stayed just over the border, north of Rodeo, New Mexico.
