Roper Lake State Park and the Pinaleno Mountains, northeast of Wilcox, are hidden gems in southeast Arizona.

In the Pinalenos, Mt. Graham, at 10,700', is the tallest of the "sky island" mountains. It looms over tiny Roper Lake and the nearby community of Safford.

We camped at Roper Lake State Park, birded the area and hiked in the Pinalenos.

It's April and the warm weather brings out the snakes. This one's a beauty but we don't know what species it is. Drop us a line if you do. It doesn't look poisonous . . .
