Postcards home

In Tucson, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is a favorite destination. This world-class, open-air museum features desert animals, birds, reptiles, plants and much more.

Javelinas Coatimundi

Mexican Gray Wolf Coyote

Queen Victoria and Octopus Agaves

Another agave

We never want to miss the raptor free flight This time, the Ferruginous Hawk is the star

It's too windy to fly, but we got good looks

Note the yellow outlining the hawk's mouth -- scary to its prey!

We enjoyed lunch at the Ocotillo Cafe Organ Pipe cacti

A few more of the 1,200 kinds of plants on display

Black-headed Grosbeak and Killdeer with a deformed bill live in the museum aviary

Western Tanager in the aviary Broad-billed hummer in the hummingbird aviary

Western Screech Owl

Museum herpetologist shows off some reptiles and explains what to do if you get bitten. Remain calm and get medical treatment as quickly as possible. Don't use tourniquets, "cut and suck" or any remedies seen in cowboy movies. You will end up doing more damage to yourself.

Black-tailed Rattlesnake

Medical treatment can be very costly. A vial of anti-venom serum costs up to $5,000 and it can take from 20 to 50 vials to overcome a serious snake bite. But that is better than death. It cost a Sierra Vista man $350,000 to treat a snake bite.

Gila Monster, beautiful but poisonous

Note the gorgeous beadwork
