BIRD FEST WINERY TOUR

Now this is the way to bird! A little birding, a little wine tasting . . . . This year's Morro Bay Winter Bird Fest included a field trip to Halter Ranch, an eco-friendly winery and vineyard on Paso Robles' west side. Winegrower Mitch Wyss loves wine and wildlife (see the winery Web site for his colorful bio).

The current property is part of a ranch that dates back to the 1880s

Touring the vineyards and pond

Halter Ranch has a World Champion Tree! Actually, this tree is tied for the largest Coast Live Oak in the world (The co-champion is somewhere in the small town of Julian, CA).

Posing with Dawn by the Big Tree and the ranch entrance

Oh yeah, time to taste!

Halter Ranch currently offers some fine Syrahs, Cabs, and Ranch blends

Grand finale -- eating our lunch in the patio behind the 1885 Victorian farmhouse
