Morro Bay Close-ups: Around the Bay

Okada Peak

Jay and Cathy Okada have the good fortune to live in Los Osos, between Montana del Oro State Park and Morro Bay. Just behind their house, we hiked up to a peak overlooking the bay. Geno and Jay continued on the trail to Montana del Oro.

Mary (Cathy's mom) and her dog Sadie joined us on the hike. They have their own rest stop along the way.

Taking a well-used trail to the top of the hill

Mary, 83 years young, is in terrific shape! Great view of the bay from Okada Peak

Top o' the peak Geno and Jay headed out on this trail to MdO

Hiking the Ridge Trail in the state park

The Ridge Trail is Jay's favorite. No question about it.

Coming in to Spooner Cove at MdO

Morro Bay Harbor

Morro Rock dwarfs the harbor area

Both pleasure and working boats are moored here

This sea lion pops to the surface and strikes a funny pose. Don't you eyeball me!!

Murals depict the long history of commercial fishing on the central coast

Unloading fresh swordfish and black cod from the boats to the local restaurants and markets

But a rusting boat indicates the uncertain future of the fishing industry
