Murre Rescue

Geno was walking on the Morro Strand beach when he spotted this Common Murre. Murres are usually in the ocean, not on the beach, so Geno thought this one might be injured or ill. He called the local wildlife rescue agency, which recommended that he bring the bird to them.

So how do you transport an injured/ill bird?? Geno put a towel over the murre and placed it in a box. Then we drove as quickly as possible to the rescue volunteer's home.

Dani, the rescue volunteer, accepts "our" murre. We called later to check on its condition, but never heard back. Maybe that's policy, or maybe it was bad news. :(

Golden Eagles vs Island Foxes

At the monthly meeting of the Morro Coast Audubon Society, Brian Latta presented Lola, a Golden Eagle. Brian described how Golden Eagles were killing the native Island Foxes on the Channel Islands. These foxes can be found only on the Channel Islands. Because Golden Eagles have good habitat in many other areas, they were captured and moved off the islands to prevent the extinction of the foxes.
