The Great Northwest Oregon Coast: Newport

Once we discovered how much the Newport area has to offer, we stayed here almost a week. The RV park was at the Port of Newport Marina, just below the famous Yaquina Bay bridge.

This was a great base camp, central to many attractions and amenities with plenty of port and marina action. The Oregon Coast Aquarium and Mark Hatfield Marine Science Center were in easy walking distance. The south jetty and Newport pier were always busy with crabbers and fishermen; it became our favorite place for spotting good seabirds. The boat launch was right behind us so small boats were coming and going all day long.

And the best part -- the Rogue Brew Pub, where they serve Morimoto Soba Ale (specially brewed for the Iron Chef to serve in his restaurants), was within easy staggering distance.

The Yaquina Bay Bridge was a masterpiece of master bridge builder Conde B. McCullough, the renown architect and engineer who constructed many of Oregon's historic bridges

The pier at the Marina is a popular place for crabbing or a stroll

The stinkier the bait, the better it is to lure crabs into the trap

The bait on the left is a dead mink...pretty yucky but it works

Rocky, the young and curious bulldog, almost got his nose nipped

Time to cook and clean the crabs. This guy is a good crabber and he caught his limit.
But he never offered us any.

No, this is not the Sydney Harbor

The annual Newport Regatta took place over the Columbus Day weekend

The pier was a great spot to watch the boat races

The Rogue Brewery and Pub is housed in a big warehouse building at the marina

They brew some mighty fine beers. Morimoto Soba Ale is custom-made for Iron Chef Morimoto.

The marina had some interesting old fishing boats The evening view out our port-side window

More interesting views. D-cup sea shells!
