| The Wallowa Mountains are a well-kept secret, even to Oregonians. Located in the far northeast corner of Oregon, the Wallowas are off the beaten track, but the lofty peaks, Ponderosa pine forests, and glacial lakes and rivers are worth the effort to get here. Hiking and biking opportunities abound. During a two-week stay, we had the only California license plates in the campground, except for Dennis King and his son Sean, who joined us for 5 days. Even campers from Portland and Medford were here for just the first time. Locals call this region "The Switzerland of America." Extending through the mountains, the Eagle Cap Wilderness -- some 360,000 acres -- is the largest wilderness area in Oregon. Lake Wallowa is one of the finest examples of a lake formed from a lateral moraine. The Wallowas were the beloved homeland of the Nez Perce. Homage is paid to Old Chief Joseph, who is buried here, and Young Chief Joseph, who led the Nez Perce in the long escape toward Canada.
